We Don't
Gatekeep

A tattoo studio where the art comes first, the attitude stays at the door, and every idea gets the attention it deserves.

Start Your Piece

The industry built walls. We tore them down.

Tattoo shops that make you feel like you're interrupting their day — the gatekeeping, the judgment, the implication that your idea isn't cool enough. Black Needle rejects all of it. Walk in with your idea, your sketch, your three-word description scribbled on a napkin. We'll figure it out together.

The Studio Floor

This is where it happens. No velvet ropes, no VIP rooms, no attitudes. Just artists who take real pride in every piece they put on skin. The buzz of machines, the smell of green soap, the sound of someone seeing their tattoo for the first time — that's the Black Needle experience.

The Artists

Four artists, four styles, one standard: every piece matters.

Mara Voss

Blackwork & Geometric

Mara spent six years in a street shop where they told her 'girls don't do blackwork.' She now runs the heaviest blackwork chair in Brooklyn. Geometric precision meets organic flow — her large-scale pieces read like architectural blueprints etched into skin.

Dante Cruz

Fine Line & Illustrative

Dante came up through fine art — oil painting, charcoal, figure drawing — before switching to skin. His single-needle work looks like pencil on paper. Botanical illustrations, architectural sketches, delicate linework that somehow holds its weight.

Single needle portrait — woman's face with hair detail
Architectural illustration — cathedral in fine line
Wildlife piece — detailed raven with realistic feathers

Neo-Traditional & Color

Rook apprenticed under a traditionalist who told them color was 'unprofessional.' They now run the most vibrant chair in the city. Bold neo-traditional pieces with saturated palettes — reimagining classic flash through a modern lens. No rules, just color theory and confidence.

Traditional rose reimagined with bold saturated colors
Eagle chest piece — neo-traditional with modern palette
Dagger through heart — bold traditional with color accents

Juno Akai

Japanese & Realism

Juno trained in Osaka before bringing her craft to Brooklyn. Her large-scale Japanese work honors tradition while her realism portraits capture expressions most artists miss — the slight asymmetry, the unposed moment. She does sleeves that take six sessions and worth every minute.

Realism portrait — elderly man with detailed wrinkles
Japanese koi fish sleeve with cherry blossoms
Hannya mask — traditional Japanese with modern shading

Styles We Speak

No style is too niche, no idea too weird. If it can be tattooed, we can do it.

Healing Is Part of the Art

A tattoo isn't finished when the machine stops. The healing is part of the process. Here's how to protect your investment.

Days 1–3

Keep the bandage on for 3-6 hours. Wash gently with unscented soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry — never rub. Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer. Your tattoo will be tender; treat it like the wound it is.

Days 4–7

Peeling begins. Do not pick, scratch, or peel the skin — let it shed naturally. Continue washing 2-3 times daily. Keep moisturizing but don't overdo it; the skin needs to breathe. Your tattoo may look cloudy — this is normal.

Days 8–14

The surface layer has healed, but deeper healing continues. Your tattoo may still look slightly dull. Continue moisturizing. Avoid submerging in water (no baths, pools, or oceans).

Ongoing

Your tattoo is healed but continues to settle for months. Sunscreen is non-negotiable — UV rays will break down ink over time. SPF 50+, always. Moisturize daily. Your tattoo is permanent; treat it that way.

Do

  • Wash your hands before touching your tattoo
  • Use fragrance-free, gentle soap
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo
  • Apply sunscreen (SPF 50+) once healed

Don't

  • Don't pick, scratch, or peel
  • Don't submerge in water for 2 weeks
  • Don't expose to direct sunlight while healing
  • Don't use petroleum-based products
  • Don't re-bandage after removing the initial wrap

Questions We Get

How much will my tattoo cost? +

Our hourly rate is $200. Small pieces start around $150, larger work is quoted based on design complexity and estimated time. We'll give you a clear quote during your consultation — no surprises.

Does it hurt? +

Yes. It's a needle repeatedly puncturing your skin at high speed. But it's manageable, and the result is permanent. Different body parts have different sensitivity levels. Your artist will work with you to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Can I bring my own design? +

Absolutely. Bring your sketch, screenshot, napkin doodle, or vague idea. Our artists will work with you to refine it into something tattooable. We never dismiss an idea because it's 'not cool enough.'

How do I prepare for my appointment? +

Get a good night's sleep. Eat a full meal beforehand. Stay hydrated. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area. Don't drink alcohol the night before — it thins your blood.

Do you do cover-ups? +

Yes. Cover-ups require a consultation to assess the existing tattoo and plan the new design. Some tattoos may need lightening sessions first. We'll be honest about what's possible.

Let's Make Something Permanent

Fill this out and we'll get back to you within 48 hours. Be as specific or as vague as you want — we'll figure it out together.
